Golf team looks for solid season
The NIACC golf team starts the season with the potential for many players to have a solid year both as a team and individually.
“For the guys, we want to win regionals, go to nationals and perform as best we can,” Chris Frenz, head golf coach, said.
Key returners for the men are sophomore Steven Wyborny and Jason Urdahl.
Frenz said he looks for leadership from both Wyborny and Urdahl.
He also looks for leadership surprisingly from a freshman in Nick Johnson from Chaska, Minnesota.
“Nick Johnson has really added a lot to our program,” Frenz said. “He is a good kid and has a good attitude towards the game.”
Other men’s golfers coach Frenz mentioned included Tyler Denny and Brain Gates.
For the women, the goals stay the same but with Frenz knowing that it may be a little tougher at regionals on the women’s side.
“There are some high quality teams on the women’s side this year,” Frenz said.
Key returners for the women this season include Brittany O’Brien, Nicole Wilson and Kendall Olson.
“The willingness to compete and the sophomore leadership this year will be our strengths,” Frenz said.
Key newcomers include Jamie Binstock and Taylor Frank.
The men last year shot on average 311-315 and the women shot 410-420.
“Both averages need to improve,” Frenz said.
One thing that will help the team this year is that regionals are in Mason City at the Mason City Country Club.
Nationals will be at Scottsboro, Alabama this year.
The team will take 12 players to Tampa, Florida March 7-12 over spring break playing on three different golf courses before the season starts.
The team’s first meet of the year is in Council Bluffs at the Council Bluffs Country Club on March 29 - 30.
