Social media users could make a difference onlineRaising awareness through your Facebook doesn’t solve anything. Yes, it raises awareness of breast cancer and child abuse, but making those trendy in social media shouldn’t be the case. There are better ways to solve problems like child abuse and breast cancer awareness than just posting pictures and not telling anyone what the meaning behind them is. There are easy points to fix this. People want to feel happy or accomplished 24/7. That’s why so many recycle or throw a penny into someone’s cup in the street. You feel better about yourself because you felt that you did something positive for the greater good. That’s the problem though and Facebook has made it worst. We become the sheep of whatever someone posts online and follow suit just so we feel like we made a change in some cause. You changed your picture to Spongebob to raise awareness of child abuse. Did you do anything about it? No, you sat at your computer and changed your picture. If you really want to start changing and preventing these problems by social media, then I suggest you actually stop talking and start doing. Posting a link to an online donation that helps counsel and comfort suicidal teens does a lot more than blabbing about it on Facebook. Post more content to people who will read your status to websites that can teach us how to help abused children in our communities. Tell people why you’re changing your picture and explain how it can be beneficial for the cause. Don’t make this a mission to feed your self-esteem; we don’t need to be raising awareness of your big ego. Find something to focus on that truly affects you in some way that people can relate to. Focus on what that true problem is. Remember you can make the difference for other people to participate and take action. That can be your first step into making a difference instead of just changing your Facebook picture. |
