Role models should inspire us

A role model, simply put, is someone that we look up to, but who exactly are our modern day role models? Do our role models even have a positive influence anymore?

Charlie Sheen may have been a role model to some. However, he has recently been caught with drugs, had his show Two and a Half Men cancelled and had his children taken away from him because of his “live-in” girlfriends. Not only has he lost his $2 million an episode paycheck (according to tvsquad.com) but he has also lost his dignity. Do we really want to look up to a man like him?

Tiger Woods, a porfessional golfer, has turned out not to be such a good role model. According to the huffingtonpost.com Woods admitted to cheating on his wife of five years with 120 women. After learning of the 121st woman that he had an affair with, Woods’ wife went through with the divorce.

Miley Cyrus, a role model for children and teens, is known for dating older men, posing virtually naked in Vanity Fair, and using stripper poles in some of her dance routines. Yet, the children in today’s society still look up to her. Is that what we want the next generation to turn out like?

Along with the bad role models come the good ones. A role model, like stated earlier, is someone that we look up to. A good role model is a person who has inspired us or affected us in a way that makes us want to be better people.

Role models that aren’t seen in the media for doing bad things are the ones we should be looking up to. Taylor Swift, pop star, Joe Mauer, MLB player, and Denzel Washington, actor, are perfect examples of great role models.
