Opinion11/12/10 Acts of kindness pay off in the end Soak it all in because it’s gone too quickly We need to find purpose in order to get up each day Photo Opinion: “What is your favorite genre of music? Why” |
We need to find purpose in order to get up each dayRealizing what we have is good is difficult. A friend of mine came up to visit for the weekend. He had just gone through a series of unfortunate family related events and just needed to get away from it all for a little bit. He’s been my friend for a long time and we know each other’s personality fairly well including humor and pop culture references. Whenever a birthday comes around, we know the perfect gift. When I’m trying to remember a quote from Lord of the Rings, he will give the answer in less than a second. We always enjoyed reading, and we always tried to help each other out with problems. A death in the family, especially of one’s son, is something that will stay with us for a long time. No one wishes for a situation like this, but I believe it’s how we choose to deal with it is the most important factor. Weeks after the tragic events, my friend now holds a job and rents an apartment. As we hung around and talked about the old days of middle school, he asked “Why is everything in my life good now that this person is gone?” As friends we normally know what the right words for each other are, but for the first time in a long time I’m stumped. All I could say was that I didn’t know, but answered that I do know life is good and situations given to us really suck when we donxt want them. It’s not the situation or event that should matter, but what we do with it. Do we decide to go in to a spiral of depression or choose to get up and live for today. I told him that he has chosen to get up every morning to look forward to a job he enjoys and that life is how we choose it. I admit I’m not the greatest person to give advice, but I hope that we can all just be able to find something in our lives to get up for the day. My friend chooses to live the life his son never got to experience. I get up for the challenges of the day and to accept them. Why do you get up for the day? |
