Remembering Kershner reinforces what makes a good movieAsk someone what his or her favorite movie is and you’ll probably hear Star Wars in there somewhere. Did you know that the second Star Wars film The Empire Strikes Back is often voted one of the most favorite movies of all time? This is a movie, not a nerd stereotype, you either like it or don’t. Empire just happens to be one of the world’s favorites, but why? In recent events, fellow fans are remembering its director Irving Kershner who passed away in November. Kershner was asked to direct this sequel by Star Wars creator George Lucas. Why did Lucas not direct it? Heck, even Kershner was wondering what Lucas was thinking. Lucas replied, “You know everything Hollywood directors should know. But you’re not Hollywood.” Meaning that Kershner knew about the development and story it takes for film to be cherished, not as though it was a meal ticket. Kershner was a dramatist and he talked to actors to dig deep into their characters. The first film of Star Wars was action packed for the summer and proved that a movie that took place in outer space, had blasters and crazy hair buns can define and set the bar for movie cinematics. The Empire film takes that bar and raises it ten more times not just for films, but also for sequels in general. I think back to the first time I saw it when I was five with my older brother and a collection of Star Wars figures set up from scenes in the movie. It was one of the greatest memories I’ll have growing up being with family and enjoying a common interest. Maybe it’s a little bit of everything that makes Empire or any movie a favorite choice. Memories, story and perhaps something to relate to with characters factor into the equation. I know, along with many fans, that Empire will sit next to the top of many liked films. |
